Having an impact

Thursday, 03 August 2017

The following is a guest post by Sarah Lloyd, a mature student who has recently completed our Preparation for Higher Education course and will be starting on our BA Professional Studies degree in September 2017. Thanks to the Lifelong Learning Centre Opportunities Fund it was recently possible for me to attend the Times Education Supplement Awards 2017 in London. I was a short-listed nominee for the Community Impact Award, in recognition of the work I deliver in schools, community settings and as part of restorative justice in specific cases. I felt this was well-deserved recognition of the...

A helping hand

Thursday, 25 May 2017

The following is a guest post by Rob Sowden, a mature student just coming to the end of a year-long placement and who will be going into his final year studying BSc Environmental Science (having progressed from our Earth and Environmental Sciences Foundation Year) in September 2017. As the end of my second year was approaching I was struggling to realise my plan of finding a paid work placement to undertake between my second and third years of study. I came from Pakistan, English is not my first language and without formal qualifications in UK it seemed impossible to fulfil my dream of studying at university. However, the part-time Certificate of Higher Education (Cert HE) in Arabic, Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies offered by the Lifelong Learning Centre was ideal for me in that I only had to attend the University for one day each week. The flexibility of the course suited me very well;...

Moving on…

Wednesday, 19 October 2016

The following is a guest post by Fi McClelland, a mature student who was one of the first cohort to graduate from our Professional Studies degree following its introduction in September 2013. The day of the graduation in July 2016 made me realise just how far I had progressed throughout my academic career, and I felt a real sense of personal triumph and accomplishment. Undeniably it was hard work, however to be awarded a 1:1 classification really made the whole experience and journey so incredibly worthwhile. Throughout my time at Leeds I have not only enhanced my academic knowledge and...
