An excellent service

Thursday, 11 May 2017

I love my job. Yes, I am one of the lucky people who gets to say that. I have worked at the LLC for nearly five years and have watched the Centre grow dramatically in that time. I have seen people come and go, new projects started or old ones improved. One thing has not changed however - all of the staff here have the same values and are working towards the same goal, namely that of raising the aspirations of under-represented groups and giving individuals from these sorts of backgrounds a chance of coming to university. I am therefore...

Onwards and upwards

Wednesday, 05 April 2017

My name is Muhammad Saleem (above far left) and I am 46 years old. I am married, have three children and I am self-employed. I came from Pakistan, English is not my first language and without formal qualifications in UK it seemed impossible to fulfil my dream of studying at university. However, the part-time Certificate of Higher Education (Cert HE) in Arabic, Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies offered by the Lifelong Learning Centre was ideal for me in that I only had to attend the University for one day each week. The following is a guest post by Alison Webster-Rudge, a mature postgraduate student who began her career at Leeds with the Lifelong Learning Centre. I left school with almost no qualifications. I wasn’t incapable, just bored and a bit lazy. There wasn’t any external motivation to succeed, no one seemed to care, so why should I? That was education in the early 1980s. It wasn’t long after I left school that I wanted to go back, realising the grass was much greener where I had been, not where I was heading. A few months working in a shoe shop on a...

University of the Year

Friday, 23 September 2016

As of today we have become the Lifelong Learning Centre at the University of the Year and rightly proud of this recognition of what Leeds stands for and has achieved! It is not always the case that lifelong learning is aligned with the core values and mission of universities – in too many places it can feel a marginal activity or one that is somehow marching to the beat of a different drum from that of the rest of the institution. But this is emphatically not so at Leeds. The values that underpin lifelong learning are exactly the values...
