Old Books
“My library was dukedom large enough.” William Shakespeare, The Tempest. It’s been 400 years since the death of Shakespeare and there have been a wealth of events run by libraries, the BBC and the Royal Shakespeare Company across the country. Somewhat topically then, our Arts and Humanities Foundation Year students recently visited Special Collections in the Brotherton Library to explore, amongst other exciting documents, some of Shakespeare’s folios. I am the module leader for The Renaissance, a module on the Arts and Humanities Foundation Year. It’s my favourite module! As part of this course, programme leader Madeleine Newman and I recently took our students to visit Temple Newsam House. Part of Temple Newsam was built in the early sixteenth century, so we were able to get a sense of the style of the Renaissance, especially since the house includes a room that is decorated in the Renaissance style. Encountering Art

We are now in the last week of the Encountering Art: An Introduction course, part of the Lifelong Learning Centre’s Spring into Summer programme designed to provide an introductory course for participants interested in finding out more about how to look at art. Over the last six weeks we have been able to visit the excellent cultural institutions within Leeds to view art within the gallery space. On Monday (25th February) we held a selection day for our new Arts and Humanities Foundation course. There has been a lot of interest in the Arts and Humanities Foundation course. It provides students with an extra year of study to help them to develop their study skills and their knowledge in arts and humanities so that they are more prepared to enter a degree programme at the University of Leeds.
