Challenges met

Thursday, 26 October 2017

The following is a guest post by Amanda Richardson, a mature student who graduated from the University of Leeds with a BA in Professional Studies in July 2017. In 2011 I was pregnant, and had started to become dissatisfied with my job. I decided that I wanted to return to higher education and was inspired by several friends who had already done so. After doing some research online I decided that the University of Leeds offered the course I wanted to do. Getting in touch with the Lifelong Learning Centre was one of the best decisions I ever made. My...

Looking back, looking forward…

2014/15 was another successful year for our Certificate of Higher Education in Arabic, Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies, with 14 students completing their studies and graduating from the LLC. These students will be able to draw on new skills, display greater confidence and bring new perspectives to whichever path they choose to follow, and we wish them all the best for the future. It’s always difficult to pick individuals for mention but here are just a couple of the inspirational stories (from the many that could be told) of former LLC students who graduated earlier this month. Laura Heskins started on the LLC’s part-time diploma in Business Management in September 2010. Despite having to commute from Sheffield, Laura demonstrated an...

Graduation Day

Friday, 24 July 2015

Graduations are nothing if not colourful. The campus and Great Hall are brilliant with flowers and crowded with people dressed for the occasion – not least the graduates themselves with their ceremonial academic gowns and hoods. And why not! Events like this are deliberately extraordinary rather than routine because they are marking something very special that could otherwise go unnoticed – the way in which study at university changes lives. So often, when we talk to our graduates, they will tell us that they never could have imagined themselves where they are now. They have found more of themselves than they...
