Farkhanda Amin, a former student on our part-time Certificate of Higher Education in Arabic, Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies and now a full-time undergraduate in the Department of Arabic, Islamic and Middle Studies, was one of two students recently selected by the University to present their research proposals at the Houses of Parliament. Farkhanda was taking part in the 'Posters in Parliament' initiative where chosen students have the opportunity to discuss their work with legislators and policy makers. New Cert HE in Arabic, Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies

Building on the success of our Certificate of Higher Education in Arabic and Islamic Studies we are pleased to launch the new Certificate of Higher Education in Arabic, Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies. This new Certificate has been developed to act as a pathway into all four degree programmes offered by the Department of Arabic, Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Leeds. The Certificate is a two year part-time programme, providing intensive support to enable students to develop their knowledge and academic skills. As part of the Lifelong Learning Centre’s commitment to providing educational opportunities for people in the local community we have, since our inception, delivered a range of short courses in the area of Arabic and Islamic Studies. Over the years we have earned a reputation for the high quality of our teaching on courses delivered in community settings and, more recently, on the University campus. Introduction to Islam and Cultural Diversity

We recently delivered a 3 day residential course entitled ‘Introduction to Islam and Cultural Diversity’. The course attracted 18 delegates from professional services. Presentations took place on a range of topics including ‘Introduction to Islamic Beliefs and Practices’; ‘Islamic Law and Political Thought’ and ‘Women in Islam’, and all were delivered by speakers who are experts in their field. The programme also included a visit to a local mosque where the delegates met the Imam and had an opportunity to ask him questions. Arabic for Everyone

As part of our commitment to providing educational opportunities to the local community, our Arabic and Islamic Studies Programme has been delivering different modules in various community settings since 1996. During this time the Programme has earned an excellent reputation for its high quality of teaching. Our first ten-week Arabic course of this academic year, Beginners Arabic, is due to begin this month and Pre-Intermediate and Intermediate courses will be offered in the New Year.
