The following blog post is a collaboration between two members of Lifelong Learning Centre teaching staff, Felix Janeway and Beccy Stirrup.  In its Blended Learning Strategy, the University of Leeds defines blended learning as ‘‘the considered, complementary use of face-to-face teaching, technology, online tools and resources to enhance student education.” This definition emphasises the value of having face-to-face, adaptable and responsive teaching as part of the learning experience. Instead of focusing on technology, it gives a name to something that we, as teachers, already inherently know. Reading Matters: a virtuous circle?

Two recent items have confirmed for me the power of literacy. Firstly, a recent study by the European Centre for Reading Recovery which argues that spending on early years’ literacy reduces spending on social welfare and prisons in later years. Secondly it was reported that a prisoner was denied access to taking ‘A’ level English Literature on the grounds it would make for a more eloquent conman. Degrees of Difference?

A recent letter in the Times Higher (July 4th) notes that student contact time is very expensive, estimating this at about £30 an hour. Similarly some of my students have also recently noted the cost of each weekly session compared to similar courses in the region. This raises the issue of what do students actually get for their money and why buy the University of Leeds version when others can be cheaper.
