Having an impact

Thursday, 03 August 2017

The following is a guest post by Sarah Lloyd, a mature student who has recently completed our Preparation for Higher Education course and will be starting on our BA Professional Studies degree in September 2017. Thanks to the Lifelong Learning Centre Opportunities Fund it was recently possible for me to attend the Times Education Supplement Awards 2017 in London. I was a short-listed nominee for the Community Impact Award, in recognition of the work I deliver in schools, community settings and as part of restorative justice in specific cases. I felt this was well-deserved recognition of the...

Celebrating the Summer School

Thursday, 20 July 2017

The ninth annual Adult Learner Summer School took place earlier this month during which 36 adults from communities across the city and beyond came to the University of Leeds to find out about routes to higher education. Attendees took part in three days of subject tasters and explored some academic and critical thinking skills for university. I came from Pakistan, English is not my first language and without formal qualifications in UK it seemed impossible to fulfil my dream of studying at university. However, the part-time Certificate of Higher Education (Cert HE) in Arabic, Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies offered by the Lifelong Learning Centre was ideal for me in that I only had to attend the University for one day each week. The flexibility of the course suited me very well;...

Recognising soft skills

Thursday, 26 January 2017

The following is a guest post by Roland Maposa, a mature student currently in his second year studying full-time on our BA Professional Studies programme.
Welcome!... three years is not a long time, before you know it, it will be over, so make the most of your time here…
These words from the LLC School Representative Khair Yacob recently struck me; a clarion call to a fully engaged and enjoyable student experience. I realise that due to constraints and circumstances that are perhaps beyond some students’ control, ‘extracurricular’ activities and experiences can be difficult to fit in. However, I would suggest that they...
