University of the Year

Friday, 23 September 2016

As of today we have become the Lifelong Learning Centre at the University of the Year and rightly proud of this recognition of what Leeds stands for and has achieved! It is not always the case that lifelong learning is aligned with the core values and mission of universities – in too many places it can feel a marginal activity or one that is somehow marching to the beat of a different drum from that of the rest of the institution. But this is emphatically not so at Leeds. The values that underpin lifelong learning are exactly the values...

Parents’ Day

Friday, 05 August 2016

Monday 18 July saw the arrival of a group of 22 parents, grandparents, staff and students from Dixons McMillan Academy in Bradford for our inaugural Lifelong Learning Centre Parents’ Day. The group found out more about university life from discussions with Learning Champions Farkhanda Amin and Roland Maposa, and from staff at the LLC who lead a session on student finance, accommodation and the range of courses available. Potential mature and/or part-time students can book a one-to-one appointment with one of our specialist university guidance officers, Mohammed Hussain and MJ Morgan, to discuss options for further study and routes to university. This discussion will...

They were then asked to give their views on a real-life problem for Waitrose – how to rationalise the company’s legendary...

A chance to confer

Friday, 12 February 2016

I attended the UALL (Universities Association for Lifelong Learning) conference earlier this month at the St George’s Centre in Leeds. With the title of Part-time and mature students in higher education: exploring and enhancing the student experience it was very relevant to the work we do so I was looking forward to learning from and meeting like-minded people. I was pleasantly surprised with the variety of institutions that were represented, from Sunderland to London. After being welcomed by the LLC Director Tony Ellis, we heard from the first of two keynote speakers. Jackie Dunne, Deputy Vice...
