An opportunity taken

Thursday, 29 September 2016

The following is a guest post by Joel Davison, a mature student who has just started his second year studying full-time on our BA Professional Studies programme. The Lifelong Learning Centre Opportunities Fund greatly helped me develop my skills over the summer. I applied to the fund for support with accommodation, which allowed me to remain in Leeds so that I could continue volunteering at The Vine Child Contact Centre. The Vine provides support for separated families where the non-resident parent is able to come and see their child or children in a safe, calm environment. Over the summer...

Monday, 25 July 2016

The following is part two of a guest post by Roland Maposa, a mature student who has just completed his first year studying full-time on our BA Professional Studies programme. But reality came back and, with it, a real and honest perspective. Starting at university has been a rebirth for me, a time of constant epiphanies. Today I can say as I've shed the 'new student’ skin that I now identify as a 'proper' full-time student. My...

A class act

Friday, 30 October 2015

As our first year BA Professional Studies students have been finding, a broad, interdisciplinary perspective is needed when analysing the contemporary worlds of work, politics and media representation. The programme requires students to develop an understanding of their own personal and professional identities by thinking through real-world problems and solutions, drawing on social theory, business and economic perspectives as well as literature, film and newspaper analysis. I recently organised for Dr Matt Davies from the University of Chester to come and give a talk about his research into the way newspapers represent trade unions and...
