Never too late for science

Friday, 27 March 2015

Researchers at the University of Oxford, working in partnership with the Sutton Trust, have recently published a report with the hefty title Subject Background: What Promotes Better Achievement for Bright but Disadvantaged Students? This highlights the extent to which choice of subject at ‘A’ Level can restrict what students may go on to study at university. It points to the dilemma of those who, for example, want to opt for a science degree yet find that they have not chosen the ‘A’ Levels in Maths or the sciences that are needed to take that pathway in Higher Education. This...

New and improved Science Foundation Years

Monday, 02 December 2013

Our Science Foundation Year (SFY) programmes have undergone some very exciting changes over the past year. Firstly, all our modules are now completely taught here at the University of Leeds. This benefits our students in many ways: from the beginning of their studies they are on the University campus getting to know their way round campus (especially making use of the Red Route when it’s wet!), finding out how to make the most of the facilities and support available such as the Library, Leeds University Union and other student support services. Our revamped science modules provide experience in scientific...

A Wise Move?

Monday, 12 August 2013

In my role as the Lifelong Learning Centre Biology Tutor, I am keen to keep up with the latest in Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) especially when a piece of technology that captures my interest and/or promises tangible benefits for relatively little investment. This year I decided to give PeerWise a go. I’d heard good things about it and as the official blurb states: “PeerWise is an online repository of multiple-choice questions that are created, answered, rated and discussed by student” I thought it would be ideal for my Biology students. As both a concept and piece of...

Lifelong learning: New decisions, new ways of life

Tuesday, 02 July 2013

As we prepare to launch our new conversion route into science, it has made me reflect on the value of lifelong learning at any age. We see so many people in the Lifelong Learning Centre whose lives have been limited in the past by decisions that they made, or had little choice over, when still quite young at school. It can be really hard to know when making choices of subject at 13 or 14 what you might be good at in many years’ time. It may be difficult to see where education leads at all, if you haven’t seen...

What happens at a Science Foundation Year Selection Day?

Monday, 29 April 2013

'Hi! Welcome to the University of Leeds!' Or as Ellen Avery and I, the Programme Leaders, like to say, 'Howdy Ya’ll!' as we are both from Texas! During our Selection Day we work to create a very welcoming and inviting atmosphere for our prospective students. From the beginning and through to the close of the day we invite students interested in studying a science, engineering or health-related undergraduate programme to spend a day with us to learn more about the programme, the Lifelong Learning Centre, and the University of Leeds. We aim to put everyone at ease...
