Summer in China

Thursday, 10 August 2017

The following is a guest post by Roland Maposa, a mature student about to start his final year studying full-time on our BA Professional Studies programme. I would like to thank the LLC Opportunities Fund for enabling me to travel to the 2017 ‘Entrepreneurship in China’ International Summer School in Hangzhou. The summer school was attended by 37 students from 19 different universities, totalling 17 different nationalities. I felt supported by both staff from the Lifelong Learning Centre and the Leeds Study Abroad Office, especially when complications arose. The administrative team for the Summer School in China...

Having an impact

Thursday, 03 August 2017

The following is a guest post by Sarah Lloyd, a mature student who has recently completed our Preparation for Higher Education course and will be starting on our BA Professional Studies degree in September 2017. Thanks to the Lifelong Learning Centre Opportunities Fund it was recently possible for me to attend the Times Education Supplement Awards 2017 in London. One thing has not changed however - all of the staff here have the same values and are working towards the same goal, namely that of raising the aspirations of under-represented groups and giving individuals from these sorts of backgrounds a chance of coming to university. I am therefore...

Onwards and upwards

Wednesday, 05 April 2017

My name is Muhammad Saleem (above far left) and I am 46 years old. I am married, have three children and I am self-employed. I came from Pakistan, English is not my first language and without formal qualifications in UK it seemed impossible to fulfil my dream of studying at university. However, the part-time Certificate of Higher Education (Cert HE) in Arabic, Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies offered by the Lifelong Learning Centre was ideal for me in that I only had to attend the University for one day each week. The flexibility of the course suited me very well;...
