The LLC reception forms an integral part of the student support function of the Centre. The reception desk is modest: an ordinary work station with a teal wall at the back and some red flowers in a corner. But a closer look tells you a lot about the LLC and its mission. There are the Matrix and CMI plaques on the wall, the former representing our impartial Information, Advice and Guidance service and the latter highlighting our CMI approved part-time provision in Business Management. Last year, we proudly placed the Green Impact Bronze Award on the counter to show our commitment to sustainability as a Centre. We are well on our way to achieving Silver this year.
The brochure display stand across the desk is for visitors to browse through information about our courses, who can talk to our reception staff for further details. If we cannot answer your query immediately, we will send information to you or fetch a member of staff from the guidance team or programme teams, who are always happy to talk to enquirers about the courses and support we offer at the LLC.
We have a dedicated resource area for mature, part-time and foundation level students. It is wonderful to see students helping each other with referencing, eating lunch and chatting with their peers or just dropping in to have a quick chat with the tutor. Student parents like the relaxed ambience, typing away on laptops while keeping an eye on the young toddler exploring the toy box. We enjoy the interaction with our students; from their first steps at the start of the year to their relief at handing in the last essay.
You will see our statement of ethos and Service Standards displayed in the resource area. You can expect us to be friendly, professional, inclusive and student-focussed. On any given day, we help with handing in essays, setting appointments for academic skills or pastoral support and sorting out problems like MS Word typing a single word in two different fonts. Our team keeps the desk staffed for longer hours in term-time for students on our evening courses. The team also manages book loans from the small library, run on a charmingly traditional system of triplicate loan cards.
The LLC aims to create opportunities so that people of any age are not bound for their lifetimes by the decisions and experiences of the past. Our reception service is committed to lifelong learning, a commitment that motivates the team to offer a warm welcome to students and visitors.
