The Childhood Studies programme offers the opportunity to explore in depth some of the most challenging and fundamental issues concerning children, young people and their families in the twenty first century. The programme is designed both for school leavers and mature students. It aims to meet the increasing demand for well-qualified specialists able to work with children and their families, both in the community and in institutional settings.
BA Childhood Studies
What will I study?
The Childhood Studies degree offers rigorous, interdisciplinary academic study in the fields of childhood, education, sociology, social policy, educational and social psychology and child welfare. It focuses on three main areas:
Childhood: Specifically, the study of the theories and context of childhood (social, sociological, material, cultural, psychological and political) and child and family health and welfare.
Education: This includes a consideration of the past and present social and political context of education, philosophical and pedagogical perspectives, inclusion and the international educational context.
Culture: This includes the study of culture and identity, cultural entitlement, childhood and youth culture and cultural industries.

The course incorporates a range of teaching styles which are designed to stimulate and develop your capacity for independent learning.

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with module learning outcomes.
Career development
The degree offers a firm foundation for careers relating to children. Graduates work in education, early years, health, social care, social work, play therapy and the leisure industries. Graduates have also trained as primary or early years teachers.
