Now that the Lifelong Learning Centre’s Green Impact Team is increasing in numbers we are all very keen to make a difference in the process of going for the gold award. This includes getting colleagues and students interested and excited about reducing our carbon footprint. The Team had the idea to go for a ‘green’ themed world record, and came up with the Route 50 Coast to Coast Challenge.
Over the course of an academic year (30 September 2013 to 31 August 2014) the Lifelong Learning Centre will attempt to virtually travel from the east to west coast of America along Route 50 from Ocean City, Maryland to Sacramento, California, covering 3,073 miles. Staff and students are encouraged to walk, run or cycle to work a bit more than they would do normally to earn ‘miles’ to put towards the challenge. Miles must be earned during the working week as ultimately we are trying to reduce our carbon footprint by using cars, trains or the bus less wherever possible – every little will help!
