The LLC has recently been audited for accreditation in the Green Impact environmental audit.

Green Impact Universities and Colleges is a very successful environmental accreditation scheme that is currently run in 46 higher and further education institutions and is delivered by NUS in partnership with the Environmental Association for Universities & Colleges. The aim of the scheme is to empower staff to take an active role in reducing their environmental impact.

Examples of current practice which were included in the audit are:

Use of re-cycled paper and duplex printing as default

Widespread recycling of waste, including bins for paper, glass, plastic, compostable material, plus guidelines on how other items can be recycled

Use of fair-trade tea/coffee for meetings; request for locally produced food from caterers wherever possible

Avoidance of the use of bottled water

Staff made aware of the need to switch of lights and monitors at the end of the day and over vacations

Our current Green Impact Team consists of: Pat Dixon, Sitara Akram and Wendy Trevor.

The LLC has been able to offer a number of scholarships to students on part-time degrees and foundation degrees in 2011-2012. These scholarships have been supported by the Footsteps Fund with thanks to generous donations from University alumni and friends.

The scholarships, which took the form of a £500 grant towards fees, were awarded to a number of students who were ineligible for any other support, and whose employer was not able to fund them, but who otherwise would have experienced financial difficulties in paying their fees. Applications from students coming from communities under-represented in HE and/or those who had missed out in their education in the past were given priority.

The partnership between Leeds employers from the public, private and the voluntary sectors with the Lifelong Learning Centre at the...

The partnership between Leeds employers from the public, private and the voluntary sectors with the Lifelong Learning Centre at the University of Leeds has once again contributed to improving the skills of managers and frontline practitioners in the children and young people’s workforce.

Part-time students received acknowledgment of all their hard work and commitment at the Lifelong Learning Centre’s graduation ceremony held on Wednesday 20th July 2011.

The children and young people’s workforce plays a vital role in shaping the future of Leeds through its work in local communities. Through their commitment to their own education and development, these staff have gained degrees in areas relevant to their professional practice. Their success also recognises the commitment of many schools to the development of their non-teaching staff in order to improve learning support. As Sally Gibbs, Programme Manager for the Foundation Degree and BA(Hons) in Learning and Teaching, notes:

The aim is to ensure that whilst individual students gain a much greater understanding of their working environment, the school and other staff within the school also benefit from this greater understanding and application of knowledge and skills.

The partnerships between the University of Leeds and the Local Authority contributes to an improvement in children and young people’s services. This view is held by Liz Chennells, the Programme Manager for the Child and Family Welfare Foundation Degree and BA(Hons) programmes, who says:

Our programmes are firmly rooted in professional practice and we regularly liaise with professional colleagues to ensure we continue to reflect this.

This is an approach which Andrea Richardson, Acting Head of Early Years at Leeds City Council, feels can only benefit her staff:

Higher education has dramatically improved the skills of the Early Years workforce.

Perhaps the last word about the benefits of study should go to Joanne Howieson, studying for her BA (Hons) degree in Early Childhood Studies, who feels one of the best things about her studies is

how it links into the work that I’m doing. I’m reading things and looking into things that I probably wouldn’t had I not been doing the course.
