I am the Programme Manager for our BA Professional Studies programme. This involves leading the programme and curriculum design, the recruitment strategy, the pedagogical approach and student support for the programme.
My PhD investigated contemporary ways of theorizing autobiography in Canadian literature, and I also have research interests in ecocriticism and the representations of waste, archive theory and ethical reading practices. I have published work on a variety of topics including Shakespeare and queer theory, dumpster diving and urban space and First Nations Canadian writing and the Canada-US border. I am the Director of the Leeds Centre for Canadian Studies and the Yorkshire Network for Canadian Studies. I also run Green Reads Leeds, a reading group in Headingley focusing on environmental issues for which I write an accompanying blog.
I have been in Higher Education teaching a range of disciplines – including literature, Canadian Studies and critical and cultural theory – since 2002, and I co-wrote a study skills book, Studying Arts and Humanities, with Abi Matthewman. I am also a trained Dyslexia Support Worker in HE. I have a particular professional interest in supporting students with developing critical reading skills and becoming independent creative thinkers. I have a passion for lifelong learning; as well as teaching on the BA Professional Studies programme I am regularly involved in running sessions for the LLC’s JumpStart course.
