The LLC peer support scheme is a voluntary scheme whereby new students on LLC programmes and part-time and mature undergraduates from across the University are given the opportunity to be contacted by a current student who has already gone through the process of finding their way around, adjusting to academic life and learning to balance the demands of home, work and study.
You can request contact from a student before you start your course, when you arrive, during the first term or any time afterwards.
Why have a peer support scheme?
Students can find the experience of university quite daunting. Students may have anxieties and questions, especially relating to juggling study, work and family commitments. Whilst University staff can and do help students we recognise that the support of fellow students who have been through similar experiences can make all the difference. Issues which may seem too ‘trivial’ or ‘non-academic’ to discuss with a tutor may be talked about more readily with a fellow student who can provide valuable support. Students can also provide useful practical tips about University life – finding quiet study space on campus, car parking spots, the best place for coffee and so on.
How does it work?
The LLC has a pool of students who have volunteered to provide peer support, from a range of departments across the University as well as the LLC and with a wide variety of life experiences. If you wish to have contact from one of these students we will ask you to complete a form giving details of your course and any other personal information which you think might help us to find the most appropriate person to contact you.
For more information about the peer support scheme, whether you need support or would be interested in providing it, please contact MJ Morgan on 0113 343 3244.
