Before you start

As part of the Lifelong Learning Centre’s commitment to encouraging the participation of all those who can benefit from higher education, these pages have been developed to provide information which may be useful if you are thinking of returning to study but don’t know where to start.

The biggest worry for adult learners is usually whether or not there will be ‘other people like me’. When people think about university students they tend to think of the stereotypical 18 year olds from fairly well–off backgrounds who are intellectual and confident. However, this is only one of many types of people who study at the University of Leeds. Students vary in age from teenagers to 60 plus and are from a range of ethnic backgrounds. Most part-time and mature students are juggling their study with family and work commitments, and although this can be difficult at times they feel the rewards more than make up for it. Our students may not have thrived in school but they have taken the plunge and returned to education at a later stage in their life, often finding themselves pleasantly surprised at how much they enjoy – and how good they are at – studying.
