The Fast Stream – it’s never too late!

Friday, 01 February 2019

This is a guest post from Ruth Smethurst, a University of Leeds graduate who joined the Civil Service Fast Stream over 10 years after earning her BA in English Language and Literature. On paper, it’s fair to say that I’m not a typical candidate for a graduate scheme. I’m mature (sort of!) at 33 years old, I have family and financial commitments and I’m not geographically mobile. And yet here I am! Making meaningful career progression whilst maintaining a balanced home life on the Civil Service Fast Stream.

How it all started

I graduated in 2006, aged 21,...

Challenges met

Thursday, 26 October 2017

The following is a guest post by Amanda Richardson, a mature student who graduated from the University of Leeds with a BA in Professional Studies in July 2017. In 2011 I was pregnant, and had started to become dissatisfied with my job. I decided that I wanted to return to higher education and was inspired by several friends who had already done so. They follow in the footsteps...

Graduation Day…the result of the last three years spent at university completing my Foundation Degree in Learning and Teaching. I feel a combination of nerves and excitement, mixed with a feeling of pride and self-satisfaction. I meet my fellow students, many who have become close friends. Together we make our way to have our gowns fitted. The University campus is filled with graduates, wearing a variety of coloured gowns. We reminisce about the struggles we...

Distance travelled…

Friday, 24 July 2015

The Lifelong Learning Centre’s mission to open up the University to students from non-traditional backgrounds, offering them the opportunity to progress into academic faculties at Leeds, is realised through the achievement of our students who go on to attain their degree of choice. It’s always difficult to pick individuals for mention but here are just a couple of the inspirational stories (from the many that could be told) of former LLC students who graduated earlier this month. Laura Heskins started on the LLC’s part-time diploma in Business Management in September 2010. Despite having to commute from Sheffield, Laura demonstrated an...
