LLC student joins international entrepreneurs boot camp

Tuesday, 20 August 2019

Three student entrepreneurs at Leeds, including the LLC’s very own Sarah Lloyd (photographed above on the far left by Hummingbird's Photography), travelled to China to take part in an international entrepreneurs’ bootcamp in July, thanks to a collaboration between the University of Leeds Business Confucius Institute and Spark, the University’s business start-up service. The ‘Young Entrepreneurs to China’ event is hosted by the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) - Leeds’ Chinese partner university - and organised by the Confucius Institute at Victoria University, Australia. This was the first time that this event was...

You’re never too old to learn

Wednesday, 07 August 2019

This is a guest post from Katie Perry, a mature student who graduated from Leeds this summer with a Foundation Degree in Child and Family Studies and will be going on to study for a BA in Child and Family Studies from September 2019.  I had wanted to return to education for a long time, I just lacked the confidence. I struggled at secondary school and left with some GCSEs but only one ‘good’ pass (a grade C). I then enrolled on an apprenticeship which entailed me working in a nursery for four days each week and spending...

From community volunteer to university student

Thursday, 30 May 2019

This is a guest post from Michelle Corns, a mature student now coming to the end of her second year studying full-time on the BA Professional Studies degree at Leeds. I was a volunteer at New Wortley Community Centre, doing my stint on reception, when we received a visitor. The Fast Stream – it’s never too late!

Friday, 01 February 2019

This is a guest post from Ruth Smethurst, a University of Leeds graduate who joined the Civil Service Fast Stream over 10 years after earning her BA in English Language and Literature. On paper, it’s fair to say that I’m not a typical candidate for a graduate scheme. I’m mature (sort of!) at 33 years old, I have family and financial commitments and I’m not geographically mobile. And yet here I am! Making meaningful career progression whilst maintaining a balanced home life on the Civil Service Fast Stream.

How it all started

I graduated in 2006, aged 21,...

A helping hand

Thursday, 25 May 2017

The following is a guest post by Rob Sowden, a mature student just coming to the end of a year-long placement and who will be going into his final year studying BSc Environmental Science (having progressed from our Earth and Environmental Sciences Foundation Year) in September 2017. As the end of my second year was approaching I was struggling to realise my plan of finding a paid work placement to undertake between my second and third years of study. I had thought obtaining a placement should be fairly easy, given my previous work and life experience and having the...
