Less than one week left to register to vote!

Friday, 22 November 2019

If you haven’t already registered to vote, then there is still time…but not much. The deadline is 23:59 next Tuesday 26th November. The process only takes five minutes and can be done via this webpage. There is also lots of useful information about voting on the Electoral Commission’s website, including answers to some Frequently Asked Questions. Before you decide who to vote for, check who is standing in your local area (constituency). There mightn’t be a representative for every party. Indeed, since the election has been called at quite short notice, some parties are still choosing their representative. If...

A letter from China

Wednesday, 20 November 2019

This is a guest post by Karolina Glasek, who recently progressed onto a BA History degree at Leeds after having completed the Arts and Humanities Foundation Year with the LLC. I recently spent four weeks at the 2019 International Summer School at Fudan University. The courses I took were ‘Beginners Chinese’ and ‘Cultural Resources of Cities in China’. The trip was a fantastic experience as I was able to learn new things, not only academically, but also personally and professionally. The ‘Young Entrepreneurs to China’ event is hosted by the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) - Leeds’ Chinese partner university - and organised by the Confucius Institute at Victoria University, Australia. This was the first time that this event was...

Wednesday, 07 August 2019

This is a guest post from Katie Perry, a mature student who graduated from Leeds this summer with a Foundation Degree in Child and Family Studies and will be going on to study for a BA in Child and Family Studies from September 2019.  I had wanted to return to education for a long time, I just lacked the confidence. I struggled at secondary school and left with some GCSEs but only one ‘good’ pass (a grade C). I then enrolled on an apprenticeship which entailed me working in a nursery for four days each week and spending...

Practice what you preach

Thursday, 30 May 2019

Lifelong Learning Centre Creative Writing tutors, Ebba Brooks and Cath Nichols, have recently collaborated in a way that they encourage their students to do. Ebba is the managing editor of non-fiction magazine The Real Story and she recently commissioned Cath to write a piece of non-fiction that addressed the theme of ‘transitions’ for both the magazine and for a live event held during Salford’s Not Quite Light festival. Cath was nervous about doing this as the topic she wanted to highlight was her own transition from being relatively non-disabled to being disabled. Given she doesn’t...
