Lifelong Learning Centre

Adult Learner Summer Schools

Our first Adult Learner Summer School took place at the Lifelong Learning Centre in July 2009. It was a great success and has been followed by similar events held at the University campus on an annual basis.

These events have come as a response to requests by colleagues in FE for activity which would address the lack of understanding amongst adult learners of the wide range of HE opportunities, the HE student experience, finance, qualifications required and the amount of contact time involved in studying at university. Each Summer School has also aimed to tackle the perception that age is a barrier to studying.

The Summer Schools have been targeted primarily at adult learners studying at GCSE or equivalent level in FE colleges in West Yorkshire, a number of whom had been participants in the Realise programme. Each year the timetable has included information, advice and guidance (IAG) and study skills sessions, curriculum tasters and a focus on the student experience of HE.
