The following blog post is a collaboration between two members of Lifelong Learning Centre staff, Jo Bates and Helen Bowman.

LLC students on our Business Studies with Foundation Year programme recently benefited from visits from two external speakers.

Kaye McDonald, Partner Co-ordination Manager at Waitrose in Harrogate taxed the students’ brains with an interactive session which required the students to match products to customer profiles in a recruitment task (and in fact tested their leadership qualities!). They were then asked to give their views on a real-life problem for Waitrose – how to rationalise the company’s legendary benefit package to allow for the introduction of the National Living Wage. Cutting the pension seemed to be a favoured option – somewhat of a worry for those of us closer to retirement than the students!

Mark Robson, Finance and Operations Manager at Marks and Spencer in Leeds Trinity held the students’ attention with a talk on pursuing careers with the retailer, offering some interview guidance and tips on handling psychometric tests. Students were also invited to give their opinion on how to handle demotivated staff in an under-performing store.

Both visits seem to have had a positive impact with content from both speakers appearing in drafts of assignments submitted subsequently.

We’re always on the look-out for potential external speakers, so if you’re interested in being involved please don’t hesitate to get in touch!
