Lifelong Learning Centre

Financial help

Opportunities Fund

The Lifelong Learning Centre has an Opportunities Fund designed to help students who would otherwise be unable, for financial reasons, to access extracurricular professional development opportunities offered though the University of Leeds, the Lifelong Learning Centre or external organisations.

To apply you must be registered for a programme or course offered via the Lifelong Learning Centre, and the Lifelong Learning Centre must be your parent department. This means that assistance cannot be given to students of other departments or institutions. However, students who have completed a Foundation Year programme with the Lifelong Learning Centre in the past or are currently a Learning Champion are eligible to apply.

In appropriate circumstances the Fund can provide help towards the cost of:

  • Childcare
  • Travel costs
  • Attendance fees for courses, conferences or residential training events
  • Other expenses

Applications in the region of £0 – £500 are normally considered. Awards above £500 can be considered but it is suggested that you contact us before making an application. We normally do not fund accredited courses which lead to a formal award or qualification.

Examples of activities that may be funded include (but are not limited to):

  • Summer Abroad placements
  • Internships and volunteering opportunities
  • Attendance at conferences
  • Accessing Lifelong Learning Centre / University of Leeds events

There are lots of different places you can search for activities but as a starting point you may want to look at the volunteering opportunities on the LeedsforLife website.

Alternatively, if you would like to take advantage of this opportunity and are unsure where to start please get in touch by emailing

The application form is available to download here.

In 2015 I applied to the LLC Opportunities Fund as I wanted to attend the International Medieval Congress which is held at the University. I had just completed my Foundation Year and was going on to study BA History so I really wanted the opportunity to be able to spend a few days mixing with historians from around the world. The LLC accepted my application and paid my attendance fee – I was delighted! I had a wonderful time listening to talks given by experts, browsing the huge book fair and watching displays of armed combat. The passion and enthusiasm of the people at the Congress was inspiring and has helped to carry me through the first year of my degree. I would definitely encourage anybody to apply to the Fund; it opened a door for me and I haven’t looked back since.
