Lifelong Learning Centre

Peer support

Students in an Islamic Studies seminar

What’s this?

A service which can provide a helping hand to new mature students by putting you in touch with a current student who can answer your questions, show you around, direct you to sources of support and generally help you to settle into University life.

Do I have to join?

No, the scheme is entirely voluntary – you contact us if you would like to be involved.

Why might I join?

Coming to university as a mature student can sometimes seem a bit daunting, especially if you’ve been away from education for a while. You may have questions or anxieties around juggling your course, work and family commitments, finding your way around campus or coping with university study. A fellow student can be a useful source of independent information, advice and support.

Who are the ‘current’ students involved in this scheme?

They’re all volunteers – a mixture of full-time, part-time, undergraduate and postgraduate students. All have come forward for the role because they want to help other students get the best possible experience of life at the University of Leeds and believe they can contribute to this by providing one-to-one support.

Who might I be paired with?

We will ask you to give us some information about yourself which will enable us to match you to someone whose background and experience maps onto yours, perhaps someone who’s doing your subject, or has young children, or has a disability, or is about the same age as you – whatever you think would be the most helpful.

Experiences of peer support at the Lifelong Learning Centre

great to have someone to turn to that had to cram everything else in as well as study

nice to share learning experiences … good to know you have some support

very helpful to have someone available to answer ‘little’ questions which I thought too trivial to ask elsewhere

it was nice to hear from someone who was doing the same course, with children. So a bit like me really, she gave me some hints on the best places to study. It was comforting to speak to someone that knew what we were going through

it’s a great way of meeting other mature students
